UFC White House Event: ABC to Oversee Regulation and Athlete Safety
The UFC has announced that the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) will act as an independent regulatory advisor for its unprecedented event, scheduled for June 14 at the White House. Given that the event will occur on federal property, there is no mandate for a state athletic commission to provide oversight.
Timothy Shipman, President of the ABC, confirmed that the UFC sought the ABC's expertise to ensure the highest standards for judges, referees, and inspectors. Additionally, the ABC will help guarantee adherence to all athlete safety protocols, including pre- and post-bout medical examinations. Shipman emphasized that all scheduled fights are officially licensed contests.
Hunter Campbell, UFC Chief Business Officer, and Marc Ratner, Senior Vice President of UFC Government & Regulatory Affairs, are set to collaborate with the ABC on the regulatory details. Ratner highlighted that the UFC will implement its industry-leading athlete health and safety standards for this unique event at the White House.
This landmark occasion marks the first professional sports competition ever held on the South Lawn of the White House. The fight card will feature six bouts, highlighted by a championship doubleheader. In the main event, UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria will defend his title against Interim Champion Justin Gaethje. The co-main event will see Alex Pereira attempt to secure a UFC title in an unprecedented third weight class as he faces Ciryl Gane. The event will be streamed live on Paramount+ for subscribers in the United States. Further details, including the schedule of fight week activities, will be announced at a later date.
