Arthur Melo's Juventus Comeback Bid: Convincing Spalletti and Ancelotti, Compared to Lobotka

Few careers in recent Serie A history have been as dramatically altered by a single transfer as that of Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo.

The Brazilian arrived at Juventus from Barcelona in 2020 with considerable hype, only to endure five largely frustrating years in Turin, failing to consistently display the elegance that once made him one of Europe's most sought-after midfielders.

Now, on loan at his childhood club Gremio, Arthur appears to be revitalized. He has set his sights on convincing Luciano Spalletti to grant him one last opportunity at the Allianz Stadium.

His return to Brazil has been marked by impressive statistics. With eleven appearances, a goal, and a remarkable 95% pass completion rate in the current year, he also helped Gremio clinch the Gaucho, the Rio Grande do Sul state championship. A minor muscular injury during the final against Internacional has been the only setback.

Arthur's self-assessment is notably confident.

“Luciano appreciates an organizing midfielder, a team's pivot, and I thrive in that role,” he stated. “Pizarro and Lobotka both flourished under Spalletti with possession-based, tactically astute football. It's not unrealistic to think I could adapt well. We shall see.”

Reflecting on his challenging period in Turin, Arthur offered a thoughtful rather than bitter perspective.

“I arrived during a transitional phase for the club with numerous changes, and that likely impacted everyone, including myself,” he explained. “I regret not being able to showcase at Juventus what I am currently demonstrating at Gremio. However, I learned a great deal in Italy.”

He expressed similar philosophy regarding his departure from Barcelona.

“It leaves a bittersweet taste; I was happy there. But Juventus allowed me to discover another culture and mature as a person, even through difficulties. These were lessons I might never have learned by staying in my comfort zone.”

Arthur also touched upon his aspirations for a Brazil World Cup call-up under Carlo Ancelotti, seizing the opportunity to recommend two promising Gremio youngsters: 18-year-old defender Luis Guedes and 17-year-old winger Gabriel Mec, as future talents to watch.

Regarding his experience playing alongside both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, his verdict was fittingly poetic: “Leo is pure magic. Cristiano embodies work ethic, hunger, ambition – a winning mentality that motivates everyone around him. I feel privileged to have played with both.”
