Former Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci has underscored the need for the national team to demonstrate 'quality and heart' in their upcoming World Cup play-off final. He anticipates a challenging encounter, expecting Bosnia and Herzegovina to 'start strong and then look to counter-attack.'

The pivotal match is scheduled to kick off at 19:45 UK time (18:45 GMT, 20:45 CEST) at the Stadion Bilino Polje in Zenica.

A palpable tension surrounds the Nazionale, given their disappointing exits in the play-offs for the previous two World Cup editions in 2018 and 2022.

Bonucci Has Faith in Italy's Prospects

Speaking to RAI Sport, Bonucci commented, "While the fans will undoubtedly generate an intense atmosphere, the game itself will be decided by the players on the field."

He stressed, "We must showcase both quality and unwavering determination tonight, as we've earned this crucial opportunity."

The victor will be determined within 90 minutes, with provisions for extra time and a penalty shoot-out should the scores remain level.

The team advancing from this tie will join Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar in World Cup Group B.

Bonucci, now part of Gennaro Gattuso’s coaching staff, further elaborated on their opponent's strategy: "We fully expect Bosnia to begin with high intensity, fueled by enthusiasm on their home ground. However, our anticipation is that they will then adopt a more defensive posture in midfield, looking to exploit counter-attacking opportunities."

Coach Gattuso has opted for an unchanged starting lineup, featuring Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean leading the attack, following their 2-0 semi-final victory against Northern Ireland on Thursday.
