Di Natale: Pio Esposito 'Reminds Me of Van Basten,' He's Italy's Future

Former Italy international Antonio Di Natale has expressed strong admiration for Inter Milan's emerging talent, Francesco Pio Esposito, even drawing comparisons to legendary striker Marco van Basten. Di Natale firmly believes Esposito represents the future of the Italian national team.

Esposito, who has already netted three goals in five appearances for Italy, is a part of the squad preparing for the upcoming World Cup play-off. Di Natale enthusiastically stated, “I am convinced he will score many more goals and will be the future of the Azzurri for the next 15 years.” He commended Esposito's impressive season, highlighting the difficulty of making an immediate impact in Serie A, securing a starting position at Inter, and earning an international call-up in his debut season.

Both hailing from Naples, Di Natale recounted meeting the promising forward last year during a visit to Spezia. “I support him and wish him even greater success than other Neapolitans who have proudly worn the Azzurri shirt,” Di Natale remarked, recalling his own cherished memories with the national team. He described Esposito as not only a gifted striker but also a "serious and humble" individual, whose potential for a top club was evident even then.

When discussing Esposito's playing style, Di Natale noted a distinction from 2006 World Cup winner Luca Toni. “He’s a bit different from Luca in his movements, and I say it with great respect. He reminds me a little of Van Basten,” Di Natale explained.

Looking ahead, Italy is set to face Northern Ireland in the World Cup play-off semifinal in Bergamo on March 26. Di Natale, who scored 11 goals in 42 appearances for Italy, is optimistic about qualification. “We deserve to qualify, and I am convinced we will succeed against Northern Ireland, even if they have nothing to lose. But we are Italy, and we must prove it,” he asserted. He also voiced his respect for national coach Gattuso, believing him to be the ideal leader to guide Italy to a World Cup that the nation cannot afford to miss.
