Italy's World Cup Play-off Hopes Jeopardized by Bastoni Red Card Against Bosnia

After a challenging performance in their play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland earlier in the week, Italy appeared to regain their form against Bosnia. Italy seemed poised to maintain their 1-0 lead until the 42nd minute when Bastoni was dismissed for a last-man challenge on Bosnia's Amar Memic. The sequence began with a poor goal-kick from Gianluigi Donnarumma, which returned possession to the Italian half. Memic capitalized, racing towards goal on the left side, prompting Bastoni, the last defender, to slide in, resulting in his immediate red card.

Adding to Italy's concerns, Clement Turpin, the referee for this match, also officiated Italy's last World Cup play-off defeat against North Macedonia in 2018. Bastoni's sending off marks the first time an Italian player has received a red card in a World Cup qualifier in nearly a decade, with the last instance being Giorgio Chiellini's dismissal against Israel in September 2016.

The Inter centre-back has recently been a controversial figure in Italy. Weeks prior to the World Cup play-offs, his conduct during the Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juventus in February drew widespread criticism. Bastoni's dive led to the wrongful sending off of Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu, a decision he controversially celebrated. This incident sparked calls from some for him to be excluded from the national squad. Furthermore, the defender has been subject to transfer speculation, with links to a potential summer move to Barcelona after the 2025-26 season concludes.
