Napoli Prepares for Conte's Potential Departure to Italy, Eyes Thiago Motta

Antonio Conte is currently among the leading contenders to become the next head coach of the Italy national team, following Gennaro Gattuso's recent exit. Reports from Italy suggest that should Conte depart from Napoli at the end of the season, the club may look to Thiago Motta as a potential successor.

Conte has prior experience with the national squad, having managed Italy for two years between 2014 and 2016. Other prominent names circulating for the Italy role include Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto Mancini, and even Pep Guardiola, according to various media outlets.

Conte himself has openly acknowledged his interest, stating, "If I were the FIGC President, I would consider myself along with others. After all, I have already worked with the Nazionale and understand the environment. I am flattered, as representing your country is a wonderful privilege."

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has also indicated he would not obstruct Conte's move to the Italy national team should he choose to take the position after the 2025-26 season. De Laurentiis recently confirmed, "If Antonio asked me, I believe I would agree." Conte will have a year remaining on his Napoli contract following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.

Should Conte return to the national team role, sources like La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Thiago Motta leads Napoli's shortlist for a new head coach. Motta, who has been without a club since his departure from Juventus last season, was previously considered for the Italy CT position in 2023 after Luciano Spalletti left Napoli.

La Gazzetta dello Sport further indicates that Fabio Grosso of Sassuolo and Vincenzo Italiano from Bologna are also likely to be on Napoli's list of potential candidates if Conte moves on.
