Northern Ireland faces Italy in a crucial 2026 World Cup play-off semi-final, with coach Michael O’Neill emphasizing his team's ability to "use pressure to our advantage." The semi-final match is set for Thursday at 19:45 GMT (20:45 CET) in Bergamo, with the winner progressing to face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

O’Neill's Strategy Against Italy

Acknowledging Italy as overwhelming favorites, especially given their absence from the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, O'Neill highlighted the immense pressure on the Azzurri. He explained, "The pressure is for them to deal with. We can add to that with how we play the game, how we approach the game... The game will be won if we make the game difficult for Italy, and then that pressure becomes prevalent in the 90 minutes. That’s how we use it to our advantage."

Squad Updates and Absences

Northern Ireland faces significant defensive challenges. Sunderland defender Dan Ballard has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained on March 14, leading to Blackburn Rovers' Tom Atcheson being called up as his replacement. This setback follows the earlier ruling out of Liverpool's Conor Bradley. On a more positive note, Ali McCann has returned to training, and the Charles brothers—goalkeeper Pierce and midfielder Shea—are both available again after missing recent fixtures.
