Bologna Boss Italiano: Aston Villa Europa League Quarter-Final is '50/50' Despite Paper Superiority

Bologna's head coach, Vincenzo Italiano, firmly believes his team holds a genuine 50/50 chance against Aston Villa in their upcoming Europa League quarter-final tie, even while acknowledging the Premier League side's perceived superiority on paper.

The first leg of this highly anticipated quarter-final will be hosted by Bologna at their Dall’Ara stadium on Thursday evening. The decisive return fixture is scheduled for April 16 at Villa Park. Bologna secured their place in this stage of the competition by triumphing over fellow Serie A club Roma with a 5-4 aggregate score in the round of 16. Aston Villa, in contrast, advanced comfortably after defeating Lille 3-0 over two legs.

Despite Aston Villa being widely tipped as favorites to win the Europa League title this season, Italiano remains resolute, stating that in a two-legged format, "anything can happen," giving his Bologna side an even probability of progressing to the semi-finals.

Italiano Previews Bologna vs. Aston Villa: "It's 50/50"

"It's 50/50. Everyone knows how complex this match is, but we must demonstrate our value, our strength, and our qualities," Italiano declared during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday. "We are familiar with our opponents, having faced them twice before, but each match presents a different narrative."

He emphasized the strategic importance of managing the tie over both legs: "We will have to manage the game over 180 minutes. Tomorrow's first leg is crucial as it provides the opportunity to set the tone for the second leg. We have every chance to succeed. We must seize our opportunities, as reaching the final eight is a source of immense pride."

Curiously, despite holding home advantage for Thursday's first leg, Bologna's recent domestic record at the Dall’Ara has been less than stellar, with six losses in seven Serie A matches played there in 2026. Italiano openly acknowledged this challenge: "Tomorrow, the stadium environment will be an obstacle, and I hope our supporters will provide significant assistance to overcome it. We approach this match with considerable enthusiasm, having secured a win in Cremona, which has allowed us to prepare effectively."

He further commented, "We achieved both a positive result and a strong performance in Cremona. I hope to replicate that in what will undoubtedly be a tough and difficult game tomorrow. I hope the supporters will continue to stand by us, as I requested at the beginning of the season. I'll use the example of Orsolini, who missed a penalty but was still applauded. That kind of unity must be protected. On paper, Aston Villa are superior to us, but with everyone's help, we can defy the predictions."

Bologna and Aston Villa have previously met twice in recent seasons – once in the Europa League league phase earlier this season and once in the Champions League in 2024-25. On both occasions, Villa emerged victorious with scores of 1-0 and 2-0 respectively, with both matches played at Villa Park.

Reflecting on these past encounters, Italiano noted a key difference for the upcoming tie: "The two previous matches were 'qualifying' rounds, single-leg games, and played away. This time, we will compete over 180 minutes, and anything can happen. We understand their strengths and weaknesses. We always faced them at the start of the season, unlike now, when we are nearing the end. They possess individual quality and significant overall value. We will need an extraordinary performance, and it will certainly be a different contest compared to our last two meetings."
