Changes implemented over the summer aimed to make Calcio more exciting and increase the game's tempo, aligning it with European standards. A key factor is a revised refereeing approach, allowing play to flow more freely with fewer stoppages.
Serie A Teams Are Scoring Freely
These adjustments have yielded significant results. Teams are scoring more, and the initial 31 top-flight matches saw no penalties awarded or VAR reviews at the pitchside monitor. This shift has dramatically reduced the number of goalless draws, a phenomenon unprecedented in the opening four rounds of either Serie A or Serie B.
So far this season, 121 goals have been scored across the first 40 Italian top-flight fixtures, averaging over 3 goals per game. In Week 4 alone, matches like Sassuolo 3-2 Juventus and Inter 5-3 Udinese contributed to a total of 39 goals from 10 games.
In comparison, the Premier League recorded four 0-0 draws in its opening four rounds, and LaLiga had three.
Adding to the trend of attacking play, Serie A has seen only six drawn matches overall this season, suggesting a stronger drive for victories.
